Having reached the age of 65 after a lifetime of independent travel, I decided to try my first cruise to Alaska to evaluate this style of journeying. I wanted to see if cruising might offer a viable compromise for the future, combining the comfort of onboard hospitality with the discovery of local cultures.
First Cruise to Alaska: Evaluation of a Traveler on the Road
For this field test, I chose a 7 day Alaska itinerary with MSC Cruises. The voyage offers stunning perspectives and magnificent scenery. Viewing wild fjords and glaciers from the sea provides a unique, contemplative vantage point.
However, the pace differs significantly from independent exploration. For those seeking a deep connection with local populations, a cruise imposes a tighter schedule and routes that are predominantly coastal.
Alaska Cruise or Road Trip? A Comparison
You cannot draw a direct parallel between an Alaska cruise and a classic road trip. Exploring by car requires at least 15 days to venture into the interior and experience the region firsthand, without filters.
Cruise highlights
- Comfort and relaxation: relaxed pace and zero organizational stress between one trip and another.
- Exclusive panoramas: spectacular views of coastlines, fjords, and glaciers accessible only from the sea.
- Daily Destinations: The ability to wake up in a different location each day.
Differences compared to a DIY trip
- Less local immersion: shore stops are scheduled and time limited.
- Coastal itineraries: the impossibility of thoroughly exploring Alaska’s interior.
Is an Alaska Cruise Worth It? My Verdict
I am very satisfied with my experiences this week in the Far North. To help you form your own impression, you can find videos of my excursions below.
I will repeat the cruise experience in the future because of its perfect balance between comfort and discovery. As long as I am able, however, I will continue to alternate cruises with traditional travel using all kinds of transport including stays in hostels and local homes to experience the authentic culture of the places I visit.
